A referral to another doctor. A letter to an insurer. A clinical memo.
Different purposes, but often the same starting point: information already recorded in the patient’s clinical notes.
Preparing the next document can mean finding those notes, gathering reports and typing the relevant details again. For a busy clinician, that is another task competing for attention after the consultation has ended.
We built Ekko’s drafting and referral workflows to make that process simpler, while keeping the clinician responsible for the final document.
As a practicing dentist, I’ve seen how incomplete information can make a handover harder. As a patient seeing different specialists, I’ve experienced what it feels like to be the person trying to connect the dots.
Each clinician may have part of the picture. The patient carries the files, remembers the conversations and tries to explain what happened elsewhere.
Even when everyone wants the best for the patient, the communication between them can be haphazard.
A referral letter won’t solve every gap in care. But making it easier to pass on relevant information is a practical place to start.
From clinical notes to a draft you can review
Ekko helps clinicians generate a draft from EMR case notes, then review and edit it for its intended purpose.
The short demonstration below shows the doctor-to-doctor referral workflow:
Choose the receiving doctor from the Ekko network.
Attach relevant reports, such as laboratory results or imaging.
Generate an AI draft from the available EMR case notes.
Review and edit the letter before sending.
Case-note integration is currently available with Plato Medical. The information available to the draft depends on what has been recorded and made available through that integration.
AI prepares the draft. The clinician makes the decisions.
A generated draft is a starting point.
The clinician checks that the history is accurate, the relevant findings are included and the reason for referral is clear. They decide what needs to be corrected, added or removed before sending.
That review matters. Missing information in the source notes cannot be assumed to appear in the letter, and generated wording may need correction.
The principle is simple: AI drafts. You review.
Beyond doctor-to-doctor referrals
The need to reuse clinical information extends to letters for insurers and clinical memos.
Each document has a different audience and purpose. A specialist may need the clinical question and relevant investigations. An insurer may request particular supporting information. A memo may need only a concise account of the issue.
The clinician still decides which details belong in the document. The aim is to reduce repetitive drafting while preserving that judgment.
One step towards better-connected care
Ekko is part of the broader vision at Slincas: connecting patients, clinicians and health information across the care journey.
We’re starting with practical communication workflows that clinics can use today. A more complete longitudinal health record is part of the longer-term roadmap.
For now, the goal is straightforward: make it easier to prepare a useful handover, so the next clinician has the relevant context and the patient has less information to piece together themselves.
