Patient communication shouldn't become another silo. Our first EMR integration is an important step toward connecting conversations, clinical teams and the patient record.
When we started building Ekko Medical, our focus was patient communication.
But as we spent more time speaking with doctors, clinic managers and front desk teams, we learned something important:
Improving communication alone isn't enough. It has to fit into the way a clinic already works.
That insight has shaped our product roadmap—and today we're excited to share an important milestone.
Ekko Medical is now integrated with Plato Medical, our first EMR integration.
Why EMR Integration Matters
Clinics already use multiple systems every day.
There may be an EMR for patient records and appointments, WhatsApp for patient communication, email for other correspondence, and separate tools for internal coordination.
Adding another standalone communication platform can easily create another silo.
That's exactly what we don't want Ekko to become.
When we asked clinicians what would make Ekko genuinely useful in their day-to-day workflow, EMR integration came up repeatedly.
Their message was clear:
Don't give us another system to manage. Make it work with the systems we already use.
We listened.
Why Plato Medical?
Plato Medical is an established cloud-based clinic management and EMR platform used by more than 4,000 healthcare providers across Singapore, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
For many clinics, the EMR sits at the center of daily operations—supporting patient records, appointments, billing and other essential workflows.
By connecting Ekko with Plato, we're beginning to bridge two parts of the patient journey that have traditionally existed separately:
the conversation with the patient and the clinical record behind it.
What Does the Integration Mean for a Clinic?
Our goal is straightforward: make Ekko fit into the clinic rather than asking the clinic to reorganise itself around Ekko.
For clinics using Plato Medical, Ekko can now connect with their existing EMR environment through Plato's API.
We've deliberately worked to make that connection straightforward, without requiring clinics to undertake a complex IT implementation project.
Once connected, the foundation is there for Ekko's patient communication workflows to work alongside the clinic's existing patient information and clinical processes.
The bigger idea is simple:
Patient communication → Ekko → EMR
One connected workflow rather than another standalone tool.
The Missing Layer Between Patient Messaging and the EMR
This integration is particularly important because of another lesson we've learned from clinics.
Patients don't necessarily want another app.
Many are already comfortable communicating with their clinics through familiar channels such as WhatsApp. Asking every patient—particularly elderly patients, anxious patients or those already undergoing treatment—to change their behaviour creates friction.
That led us to rethink our original approach.
Rather than focusing solely on replacing the communication channel patients already use, we're building Ekko to become the structured clinical layer behind those conversations.
Patients should be able to communicate naturally.
Clinic teams need something different behind the scenes:
A structured team inbox
Role-based access
Doctor oversight
Internal collaboration
Clear accountability
Audit trails
Communication history
Operational visibility
And ultimately, those communication workflows need to connect with the systems where the rest of the patient's clinical journey is managed.
That's where EMR integration becomes so important.
Building Around the Clinic's Existing Workflow
There is a principle increasingly guiding how we build Ekko:
Good health technology shouldn't create another workflow. It should fit into the one clinicians already have.
Healthcare professionals already have enough systems, logins and administrative responsibilities.
Technology should reduce fragmentation—not add to it.
That's why our Plato integration represents more to us than simply connecting two pieces of software.
It represents a shift in how we're thinking about Ekko.
We're building toward a communication infrastructure that can sit between the patient, the clinical team and the systems the clinic already relies on.
What's Next?
Plato Medical is our first EMR integration.
It won't be our last.
We're continuing to explore integrations that can make patient communication more connected while reducing the administrative burden on clinical teams.
We're also working toward the next part of the vision: allowing patients to remain on communication channels they already know while giving clinics the structured workflows, governance and oversight they need behind the scenes.
We're not building all of this in isolation.
The direction of Ekko continues to be shaped by conversations with clinicians, clinic managers and healthcare teams about what actually happens in their practices every day.
That feedback has already changed our product.
We expect it to keep changing it.
